The Life

April 23, 2022

“And where I go you know, and the way you know.” Thomas said to Him, “Lord, we do not know where You are going, and how can we know the way?” Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me” (John 14:4-6).

In the creation account, God made Adam out of the earth and breathed into him the breath of life. At that point man became a living being. That refers to his physical life. God also created man in His image and likeness. That refers to his spiritual, emotional, and intellectual life. God created Eve out of Adams flesh, making her the same as Adam physically, spiritually, emotionally, and intellectually. So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them (Genesis 1:27). God placed Adam and Eve in a garden that He created especially for them. It was called Eden. God gave them liberty to flourish as the epitome of His creative work. He said, however, Of every tree of the garden you may freely eat; but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die. (Genesis 2:16-17). Adam and Eve disobeyed God and ate the forbidden fruit. They did not die physically that day, but they would eventually die physically. (Genesis 3:19) In the sweat of your face you shall eat bread till you return to the ground, for out of it you were taken; for dust you are, and to dust you shall return. After 930 years, Adam died (Genesis 5:5). Scripture does not give the account of Eve’s death, but she did die as all flesh dies because of the curse of sin.

What is often overlooked in regard to this account is the fact that, although Adam and Eve did not physically die the day they sinned against God, they spiritually died the moment they ate the forbidden fruit. (1 Corinthians 15:21-22) For since by man came death, by Man also came the resurrection of the dead. For as in Adam all die. . . . However, by God’s great love, grace, and mercy, He has provided the means whereby mankind can be made spiritually alive. That means is through faith in Jesus Christ. Jesus said, I am the way, the truth, and the life. The Apostle Paul said, For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ all shall be made alive

Jesus Christ is the liberator from spiritual death. Since the fall of Adam and Eve, all mankind lives in the shadow of physical and spiritual death. We are born physically alive and will eventually physically die, but all too often we are not aware that we are born spiritually dead, separated from God, cursed by the possession of a sinful nature. For all have sinned and fall short of the lory of God (Romans 3:23). For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord (Romans 6:23).

When the prodigal son returned home from the distant country, his father said, for this my son was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found (Luke 15:24). The one who comes to Jesus from the land of sin and darkness has passed out of death into life (John 5:24). Those who believe in Jesus have everlasting life (John 3:36). In truth, Jesus is our life (Colossians 3:4). Amen.
