The Truth

April 22, 2022

“And where I go you know, and the way you know.” Thomas said to Him, “Lord, we do not know where You are going, and how can we know the way?” Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me” (John 14:4-6).

Jesus Christ is the full and final word of God to mankind. The Apostle wrote (Hebrews 1:1-2) God, who at various times and in various ways spoke in time past to the fathers by the prophets, has in these last days spoken to us by His Son . . . . In the Garden of Eden it was the Lord who spoke the truth to Adam and Eve, but it was Satan who tempted our first parents to believe a lie. From that time forward, man has been blindly groping in ignorance and spiritual darkness. The way of the wicked is like darkness; they do not know what makes them stumble (Proverbs 4:19). This I say, therefore, and testify in the Lord, that you should no longer walk as the rest of the Gentiles walk, in the futility of their mind, having their understanding darkened, being alienated from the life of God, because of the ignorance that is in them, because of the blindness of their heart (Ephesians 4:17-18).

The imaginations of man are countless and endless, but his imaginations are just that - his imaginations. Truly, this only I have found: that God made man upright, but they have sought out many schemes (Ecclesiastes 7:29). Truth is a rare commodity among men. It is as though we want to live in a state of delusion. No wonder our culture spends billions of dollars and billions of hours engaged in ‘escapism’ - sports, fiction literature, movies, drugs and alcohol, television (and if you haven’t already realized it - reality T.V. is anything but, and wrestling is not real!) . . . because, although they knew God, they did not glorify Him as God, nor were thankful, but became futile in their thoughts, and their foolish hearts were darkened. Professing to be wise, they became fools . . . (Romans 1:21-22). While these verses speak with regard to knowing God, they also reveal the condition of man apart from God - futile (empty; foolish) in thoughts, foolish (without understanding) in their darkened (obscure; incapable of perceiving) heart, professing to be wise but in reality they are fools (insipid; a simpleton; foolish in attitudes and actions).

Truth cannot be found in a system of philosophy, but in the Word of God, Jesus Christ. He is the Truth of God. He reveals God and exposes man. In Him are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge (Colossians 2:3). To ignore Him is to become ignorant of the truth. (1 Corinthians 1:21-24) For since, in the wisdom of God, the world through wisdom did not know God, it pleased God through the foolishness of the message preached to save those who believe. For Jews request a sign, and Greeks seek after wisdom; but we preach Christ crucified, to the Jews a stumbling block and to the Greeks foolishness, but to those who are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God. Amen.
