Have No Fear: Speak The Truth

October 12, 2020

What I tell you in the darkness, speak in the light; and what you hear whispered in your ear, proclaim upon the housetops (Matthew 10:27).

We are living in a day when truth is a rare commodity. It seems you can’t trust what you read, hear, or even see anymore. We’ve always had ‘fake news’, but it is more prevalent now than ever. People have taken to heart the right to ‘freedom of speech’, I just wish they would take to heart the right to ‘freedom of truth’.

One of the fears people have in witnessing is ‘what do I say?’ Because of that fear several things have emerged: 1) people don’t share the Gospel for fear of getting it wrong, 2) various methods have been developed to help people share the Gospel (i.e. Evangelism Explosion, Continuous Witness Training, The Roman Road to Salvation, etc.), or 3) leave witnessing to ‘the professionals’ (i.e. pastors, evangelists, missionaries, etc.).

Jesus told His disciples, and He tells us as well, All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age (Matthew 28:18-20, emphasis mine).

Moses claimed to be tongue tied when the Lord commissioned him to go to Pharaoh and demand the release of the Jews. Then Moses said to the Lord, “Please, Lord, I have never been eloquent, neither recently nor in time past, nor since You have spoken to Your servant; for I am slow of speech and slow of tongue.” The Lord said to him, “Who has made man's mouth? Or who makes him mute or deaf, or seeing or blind? Is it not I, the Lord? Now then go, and I, even I, will be with your mouth, and teach you what you are to say (Exodus 4:10-12, emphasis mine).

It is the same word Jesus gave to His disciples. It is the same word He gives to all of us - “I will give you the words to say.” But when they hand you over, do not worry about how or what you are to say; for it will be given you in that hour what you are to say. For it is not you who speak, but it is the Spirit of your Father who speaks in you (Matthew 10:19-20, emphasis mine).

“Lord Jesus, teach me to trust in You every moment of every day so that I will not fear to share the good news of Jesus Christ with those to whom Your Holy Spirit directs me. May I always trust in Your words and not in my own so that I may speak the truth to the needs of others as those needs are revealed to me. To Your honor and glory I ask, Amen.”
