Divorce - the Answer: Part 3

August 5, 2021

And He answered and said to them, “Have you not read that He who made them at the beginning ‘Made them male and female,’ and said, ‘For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh’? So then, they are no longer two but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let not man separate” (Matthew 19:4-6).

From Genesis 1:27 and 2:24, Jesus laid down 4 reasons why God made no provision for divorce in His plan for marriage.

God created a man and a woman. He did not create a group of men and a group of women so they could choose for themselves. Adam and Eve were joined together as mates. There were no other options. In man’s world there are options. In God’s plan there are no options, not even divorce.
The word ‘joined’ (‘cleave’ in other English versions) is a word indicating a strong, inseparable bond much like a ‘weld’. In welding, the surfaces or edges of pieces of metal are super-heated and melted together. If done correctly, the weld is stronger than the individual pieces. And that’s what marriage is all about.
The ‘one flesh’ concept has nothing to do with sex. If it did then every person you had sex with would be your spouse. The ‘one flesh’ idea is that the husband and wife become inseparable, indivisible, and interwoven in mind, heart, and spirit. A child born of this union is the perfect example of what a marriage is - the DNA of the child is a mixture of both parents.
In Genesis 2:22 Scripture reads, . . . He brought her to the man. Here the text reads, . . . what God has joined together. This is the most important principle in marriage and the most important safeguard against divorce. Allowing God to select your mate and lead you in the covenant union of marriage is the antidote for those things that lead to divorce.

For the Christian, marriage is not a social construct for personal pleasure or goals. It is God’s plan for men and women in pleasure, procreation, and pursuit of His will for humanity and creation. He created male and female to complement, support, encourage, and give and receive love and joy through the mutual commitment of each in the covenant of marriage. Man and woman are creations of God. Marriage is a creation of God. Children are a creation of God. Family life is a creation of God. To leave God out of the core of what we are and what we do as human beings is to create the current ungodly mess we are experiencing today.

“Father, forgive us for removing You from our schools, government, economics, religion, but most of all from our lives and homes. You are right in saying although we know You, we do not glorify You as God, nor are we thankful, but we have become empty in our thoughts, our hearts have become godless and all of our faculties we have become senseless fools. To our shame we are reaping the whirlwind of our sinful rebellion against You. Forgive us Lord. Amen.”
